Hamas offers mediation between parties to Yemen war — Anadolu Agency

Hamas has offered to mediate between the parties to the war in Yemen and is awaiting a response, Khalil al-Hayya, head of the group’s political bureau, said. He made the statement in his first televised interview since being appointed to the post in July, Anadolu Agency reports.

Mediation proposal

According to al-Hayya, Hamas has already conveyed its proposal to the conflicting parties in Yemen. He expressed hope that it would be accepted. He made the statement on Qatar-based Al Araby TV.

The Houthis have controlled Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, since 2014 and have been fighting a Saudi Arabia-led coalition for more than ten years. According to the agency, hostilities, which had largely been suspended after the 2022 truce, resumed in July. At that time, the Houthis announced a blockade of Saudi shipping in the Red Sea and later said they were advancing along the coast.

Statements on Gaza and Palestinian unity

Al-Hayya also said that Hamas leaders had met with U.S. officials more than four times since last year. According to him, the Palestinian issue, the Gaza Strip and Palestinian demands were discussed during these contacts. He said movement representatives sensed understanding from the U.S. side but expect practical action.

The head of Hamas’s political bureau called for the implementation of the roadmap for Gaza and accused Israel of obstructing efforts by Arab and Muslim countries to provide aid to the Strip. He also said Hamas was ready to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to formulate a national program and political unity.

In al-Hayya’s view, the elections scheduled for November should help restore the geographical and political unity of Gaza, the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem. If the elections are postponed, the current political alliance will remain open to other factions, he said.
