Chinese AI Is Displacing OpenAI and Google from the African Market
Chinese artificial intelligence models are rapidly gaining ground in Africa, where an increasing number of developers are opting for solutions from Alibaba, DeepSeek, and other Chinese companies. The main reason cited for this shift is the lower cost of open-source models compared to products from OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and Google.
One example is Ugandan developer Ernest Mwebaze, who tested both American and Chinese models while developing the Sunflower system to work with local languages. According to him, Alibaba’s solution handled Uganda’s dozens of languages better, proved cheaper to use, and allowed him to fine-tune the model using his own data. Today, Sunflower is used throughout the country, particularly by farmers to receive weather forecasts and farming recommendations in local dialects.
A similar trend is observed in other countries on the continent. In Kenya, Chinese models are used to automate legal and business processes; in Nigeria, to create educational platforms; and in Ghana, to develop local chatbots.
Analysts note that for most African companies, it is not the models’ maximum performance that is decisive, but rather the balance between cost and capabilities. Unlike the closed services offered by OpenAI or Anthropic, open-source Chinese models can be run on a company’s own servers, adapted to specific tasks, and do not require payment for each query.
The popularity of such solutions is growing rapidly. According to OpenRouter, the share of open-source Chinese models has increased over the past year from less than 25% to approximately half of all user requests to the service. At the same time, on the Hugging Face platform, 19 of the 25 most popular open-source models were created by Chinese companies.
China is also actively promoting its technologies in Africa through partnerships, investments, and support for developers. According to local entrepreneurs, Chinese companies offer free computing resources, technical assistance, and simplified access to their software for developers. Against this backdrop, American companies often remain less visible in the regional market.
Experts believe that the situation in Africa demonstrates a new phase of global competition in the field of artificial intelligence. While American companies once unquestionably dominated the market, today Chinese open-source models are increasingly becoming the foundation for creating new products in developing countries.
According to The New York Times, the main reasons for this choice are lower cost, the ability to freely download and modify the models, and their better adaptation to local needs.
