Confederation criticizes President Nawrocki over fuel tax — Interia

In Poland, Confederation politicians criticized President Karol Nawrocki for signing a government law on a windfall profits tax on fuel companies. At the same time, representatives of New Hope and Ruch Narodowy, two forces within the Confederation, said that the decision does not rule out the possibility of further cooperation with the president, Interia reports.

Nawrocki signed the law while also referring it to the Constitutional Tribunal for subsequent review. In a statement, the president said that fuel prices are currently at their highest, and that the government is responsible for this, in his view, by using taxes and margins to increase budget revenues.

The president also called on the Sejm to begin considering his bill. According to him, the document is intended to reduce the margins of fuel companies and provide reimbursement of fuel costs for farmers at a level that would restore the profitability of agricultural production.

New Hope criticism

Sławomir Mentzen said that he regretted the president's consent to introduce the tax. Przemysław Wipler criticized the decision, claiming that it would affect Poles who are saving for retirement and invested in Orlen shares.

MP Bartosz Pejo stressed that the Confederation would not change its position for the sake of better relations with the president. He named three main reservations: in his view, the law is retroactive, places a burden on Orlen shareholders, and may affect consumers. According to Interia, the tax is to be in force for a year and cover the period starting from March 2026.

Ruch Narodowy's position

Michał Nieznański, a close associate of Ruch Narodowy leader Krzysztof Bosak, agreed with the criticism of the president and said that he should not have yielded to pressure. At the same time, he believes that signing the law will not block further cooperation between the Confederation and Nawrocki.

According to Nieznański, the decision may be beneficial for the president in his political confrontation with the government, but it will not solve the problem of fuel prices. He suggested that fuel companies may shift the tax burden onto consumers.
