Crowley is projected to have won the Democratic primary in Wisconsin
According to CBS News projections, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley has won the Democratic Party primary in Wisconsin and is set to become the party’s nominee in the state’s gubernatorial election in November. His opponent in the general election will be Republican Congressman Tom Tiffany, who won his party’s primary by a wide margin.
Crowley, who was considered a more centrist candidate during the campaign, led State Assemblywoman Francesca Hong by less than half a percentage point with nearly all votes counted. According to BBC News, the result was unexpected, as Crowley had briefly suspended his campaign last month to support another candidate and had trailed Hong by double digits in the polls leading up to the election.
Crowley later returned to the race and received the endorsement of Wisconsin’s incumbent governor, Tony Evers. On Wednesday morning, he wrote on X that it was time to “get to work.” Among his priorities, the politician cited affordability, strengthening schools, creating well-paying jobs, and expanding opportunities for all parts of the state.

Hong, who was considered the favorite ahead of the vote, sought to become the first Democratic socialist to serve as governor of Wisconsin. According to AP News, she conceded defeat, and her campaign manager stated that the candidate is proud of the campaign she ran. Senator Bernie Sanders and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who often support left-wing candidates, did not endorse any of the candidates in this race.
Crowley’s projected victory interrupts a string of successes by left-wing candidates in the U.S. Democratic primaries. Meanwhile, in neighboring Minnesota, Peggy Flanagan won the Democratic nomination for the Senate, defeating her more centrist rival, Angie Craig. In Connecticut, Luke Bronin defeated John Larson, a 14-term congressman, and became the Democratic nominee for the House of Representatives.
Tiffany, who is backed by U.S. President Donald Trump, also emphasized the cost of living in his campaign. His platform includes tax cuts, support for farmers, and improvements to healthcare. BBC News notes that the race in Wisconsin is expected to be competitive and will be significant in the context of the U.S. midterm congressional elections.
