Lithuania is launching a €1 billion military procurement program

Lithuania is launching a major upgrade of its military equipment. The country plans to purchase off-road vehicles and trucks for the army at a cost of approximately one billion euros.

The new equipment will be delivered to the military gradually between 2026 and 2032. Officials in Vilnius say this is one of the largest investments in military logistics in the entire history of the Lithuanian army.

Lithuania continues to actively strengthen its Armed Forces amid security threats in the region. This time, the country has decided to significantly upgrade its military equipment fleet and purchase new off-road vehicles and trucks for various purposes. According to the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defense, the total cost of the purchase is approximately one billion euros.

The Lithuanian Defense Resources Agency has already signed a contract with Veho Lietuva, which represents the German manufacturers Mercedes-Benz Group AG and Daimler AG.

What equipment will the army receive?

As part of the project, the Lithuanian military will receive several types of vehicles. These include the legendary Mercedes-Benz G-Class military off-road vehicles, as well as Mercedes-Benz Unimog, Mercedes-Benz Zetros, and Mercedes-Benz Arocs trucks. Each of these models has its own specific purpose.

For example, the G-Class will be used to transport personnel and carry out mobile missions. Unimog trucks have proven themselves in difficult terrain and can operate even in harsh off-road conditions. The Zetros and Arocs are designed to transport large quantities of cargo, vehicles, and equipment, as well as to support military units during various operations. That is why the Lithuanian Army views this procurement not merely as a fleet upgrade, but as a significant enhancement of its capabilities.

The vehicles will be delivered over several years

Deliveries will begin in 2026 and continue through 2032. This schedule will allow for the gradual introduction of the new vehicles into service, training of personnel, and adaptation of logistics processes.

Lithuania will receive part of the funding for the purchase through the European Union’s SAFE program, which provides support for member states’ defense projects. The Lithuanian Ministry of Defense emphasizes that this not only strengthens its own security but also enhances NATO’s overall defense capabilities on its eastern flank.

Why is this procurement necessary?

The main goal of the project is to make the army more mobile and effective. Modern warfare has shown that logistics plays no less of a role than weaponry. The success of many operations depends precisely on the speed of delivery of ammunition, fuel, equipment, and troops. The Lithuanian Ministry of Defense emphasizes that the new vehicles will help to rapidly transport personnel, weapons, and necessary resources even under difficult conditions.

The ministry noted: “This procurement is one of the largest investments in the logistical capabilities of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.” They also emphasized that the new equipment will enhance the readiness of the Lithuanian Army’s First Division to carry out missions both in peacetime and during crises or war.

Why Mercedes was chosen

The Ministry of Defense explained that the decision to purchase these specific vehicles was not made by chance. One of the main reasons is compatibility with the equipment already in use by the Lithuanian military. This allows for significant reductions in costs for maintenance, repairs, and training for mechanics and drivers.

In addition, the military already has experience working with Mercedes equipment, which allows for faster deployment of the new vehicles. Another argument is the reliability of these models, which are used by the armed forces of many countries around the world and have long proven themselves in challenging conditions.

Lithuania continues to strengthen its defense

In recent years, Lithuania has significantly increased its defense spending. The country is actively modernizing its military, purchasing modern weaponry, developing its air defense system, and strengthening cooperation with NATO allies. Particular attention is being paid to troop mobility and logistics, as the experience of the war in Ukraine has shown just how important speed and the ability to rapidly redeploy forces and resources are.

The new procurement of military vehicles is intended to be another step in this direction. In fact, Lithuania is investing not only in equipment but also in its army’s ability to respond quickly to any challenges and operate effectively in modern warfare. This was reported by LRT.

In Lithuania’s border region, located near the strategically important Suwalki Corridor and the Kaliningrad Oblast of the Russian Federation, large-scale exercises of the Volunteer Border Guard Forces, “Strong Shield – 2,” have begun

The Lithuanian Army has received its first maritime drones to enhance its capabilities in the Baltic Sea. This was announced by the Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, Raimundas Vaikšnoras.
