Medvedev proposed that the Baltic states invoke Article 5 of the NATO Treaty against Ukraine

Medvedev proposed that the Baltic states invoke Article 5 of the NATO Treaty against Ukraine

Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, stated that the Baltic states could invoke Article 5 of the NATO Charter against Ukraine due to incidents involving drones.

He wrote about this on Telegram.

His statement was a reaction to remarks by Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna and Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys regarding the security situation in the region and NATO’s potential response to Russia’s actions.

Medvedev sharply criticized the European diplomats, using offensive language to call them “morons” and accusing them of “Russophobia.”

He also stated that instead of discussing Russia’s actions, NATO countries should have considered invoking Article 5 of the Washington Treaty against Ukraine in the event of drone incidents.

“They should have proposed something else: to apply Article 5 of the Washington Treaty against the country in connection with the attack,” Medvedev wrote.

The Baltic states had previously reported incidents of drones violating their airspace. Subsequently, some of them were identified as Ukrainian drones that had accidentally strayed into the territory of the region’s states.

Czech President Petr Pavel stated that Europe must take greater responsibility for its own security, as the U.S. is gradually shifting some of these obligations onto European countries.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said in an interview with Newsmax that there is “broad support” among alliance countries for U.S. President Donald Trump’s campaign against Iran’s nuclear and missile capabilities.
