Meta lost a court case regarding compensation for publishers in Italy
Meta Platforms has lost a court case regarding a decision by the Italian regulator that requires the platform to pay compensation to publishers for the use of excerpts from their news content.
This is stated in a ruling by the Court of Justice of the European Union.
The court ruled that publishers’ right to fair compensation is consistent with EU law if the remuneration constitutes payment for permission to use their publications online.
The court also upheld the requirement that digital platforms negotiate with publishers without reducing the visibility of their content in search results and provide the data necessary to calculate payments.
The ruling notes that such restrictions on the freedom to conduct business may be justified, as they contribute to the formation of a fair copyright market and help media outlets recoup the costs of producing news content.
Meta CEO and billionaire Mark Zuckerberg has decided to shut down one of the company’s largest and most costly projects—the Horizon Worlds metaverse—which has incurred losses of $80 billion. Support for the VR platform on Quest devices will end by mid-June, and the app will disappear from the app store by the end of March.
In addition, Meta Platforms Inc. announced a price increase for its Quest VR devices due to a significant rise in production costs for high-performance equipment. The changes took effect on April 19 and will affect the U.S., U.K., European, and Japanese markets.
