Ashanti Region minister calls for support for Accra–Kumasi Expressway

In Ghana, Ashanti Region Minister Frank Amoakohene called on citizens to support the government of President John Mahama in completing the expressway project between Accra and Kumasi. According to him, the road is intended to improve transport links between the two cities and contribute to the development of modern interconnected urban centres.

Support for the project

As MyJoyOnline reports, Amoakohene said in an interview on the Ekosii Sen programme on Asempa FM that opposition to the construction could harm the development interests of the Ashanti Region. He noted that the expressway is needed to meet the growing transport needs of Accra and Kumasi and reduce congestion along this route.

The minister also assured that traditional leaders and residents of the Ashanti Region are ready to cooperate with the government and contractors for the successful implementation of the project. According to him, the region is ready to help ensure the road is completed and handed over for the benefit of residents.

Interchanges and funding

According to Amoakohene, the project includes overpasses at major intersections through which drivers will be able to access the expressway. He believes that such interchanges will also help ease traffic pressure.

The official added that President Mahama had spoken of plans to involve the military to support contractors and ensure the project progresses according to schedule. In addition, according to the minister, the finance minister assured that funds for the project would be available by December 2026. Amoakohene called political will a necessary condition for implementing large-scale infrastructure projects.
