The Russian Foreign Ministry lodged a protest with Moldova over a violation of the Vienna Convention
On July 21, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Moldovan Ambassador Liliana Daria and lodged a protest over alleged violations of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations during two incidents involving staff and vehicles of the Russian Embassy.
According to the Russian side, on July 19 in Chisinau, police stopped a Russian embassy bus to check documents and, without explanation, removed its diplomatic license plates. The Russian Foreign Ministry also stated that law enforcement officers allegedly used force against diplomatic mission staff and threatened them with detention.
The second incident, according to Moscow, occurred on the night of July 21 at the “Leuşeni” border crossing. The ministry claims that Russian embassy staff members, who were traveling to Russia with official cargo, were unjustifiably detained at the border for over four hours.
The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the Russian side reserves the right to take “reciprocal measures” in response.
So far, the Moldovan authorities have not issued an official response to the Russian side’s statements.
