Police officer detained on Jeju in missing persons case
On South Korea’s Jeju Island, a police officer was detained without a warrant on suspicion of prematurely closing missing persons cases without confirming the individuals’ safety. The Korea Herald reported this, citing police.
Suspicions over case closures
According to the Jeju Provincial Police Agency, the officer was detained on suspicion of dereliction of duty, falsifying official electronic records, and obstructing the performance of official duties through deception.
The grounds for the urgent detention were the discovery that the officer had also prematurely closed another missing person case. The body of the man whose case had been closed was found on Saturday.

Search for Chang Mi-ran
Chang Mi-ran, 37, whose family reported her missing in May, has still not been found. Police suspect that in both cases, the officer arbitrarily closed the cases after telling the missing persons’ relatives that they were safe.
The officer claimed that he closed Chang Mi-ran’s case after reporting to his superiors that he had spoken with her. However, a recent review found no phone connections between him and the missing woman. On Thursday, police and the coast guard launched a large-scale search for Chang Mi-ran.
