A powerful earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday morning; the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) initially estimated its magnitude at 7.4. The tremors were felt in Bogotá, as well as in Quito, the capital of neighboring Ecuador, according to Deutsche Welle.
The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the eastern part of the Chocó department, near its eastern border and south of the Tatama National Nature Reserve. According to the USGS, the focus was at a depth of about 107 kilometers. The Colombian National Service recorded a lower magnitude than the American seismologists.

Chocó Governor Nubia Carolina Córdoba-Curí stated that authorities are concerned about possible aftershocks. According to her, the epicenter was in the municipality of San José del Palmar, and in the administrative center of the department of Quibdo, there are casualties and significant damage to buildings has been reported.
Authorities have begun assessing the damage to prepare an initial official report. The tremors were also felt in Panama and Venezuela. The nearest major city to the epicenter is Cartago, located approximately 30 kilometers away.
