The West has not reacted to the launch of Putin’s “most powerful” nuclear missile
The test launch of the RS-28 Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile, which dictator Vladimir Putin calls “the most powerful in the world,” drew no public reaction from Western leaders or governments. Despite a massive media campaign in Russia, neither Donald Trump, nor European politicians, nor representatives of Western defense departments have officially commented on this launch.
On May 12, Putin announced his intention to put “Sarmat” missile systems on combat duty by the end of the year, and the very next day declared further modernization of strategic nuclear forces. The Kremlin called the launch an important event for the country, and Russian officials claimed that the new missile is allegedly “unmatched.”
The development of the “Sarmat” took about 15 years. The main purpose of this missile is to replace the Soviet “Voevoda” systems, which have been in service since the late 1980s. Previously, their maintenance was partially carried out in Ukraine, but after the occupation of Crimea and the start of the war, such support became impossible.
At the same time, military analysts note that the “Sarmat” is not a strategic breakthrough, but merely allows Russia to maintain its fleet of heavy intercontinental ballistic missiles. Since the early 2020s, Russia has conducted at least six tests of this system, and most of them ended in failure. According to experts, the missile’s reliability remains questionable.
