Rutte announced a $40 billion NATO defense initiative

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced the launch of a new initiative, Drone Edge, aimed at strengthening defenses against drones.

The project involves large-scale investments—more than $40 billion—in the development of technologies to counter drones, which have become a key element of modern warfare.

As part of the initiative, Alliance countries plan to enhance their capabilities to detect, track, and neutralize unmanned systems, as well as develop new means of protection against aerial threats.

Rutte stated that, given the experience of the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, the Alliance must expand its capabilities to detect, identify, and neutralize unmanned aerial vehicles that could intrude into the airspace of its allies.

As part of the Drone Edge project, NATO member countries will invest $40 billion in counter-drone capabilities over the next five years.

“Since these capabilities require specialists, the allies are also committed to training five times as many drone operators in their armed forces; by the end of 2027, NATO will support allies in various ways so that they can fulfill their commitments,” the NATO Secretary General announced.

According to him, the Alliance will launch a “drone countermeasures marketplace,” aimed at helping allies procure counter-drone capabilities quickly and in large quantities.

Additionally, Rutte said, the Alliance will expand its capabilities for training drone pilots, notably through the NATO Flight Training Europe project. He noted that Finland, France, and Sweden have joined the project, bringing the total number of Alliance members participating in the initiative to 20.

“Together, we are building an alliance ready to counter drones. We are using the latest innovative technologies, investing in our transatlantic defense industries, and drawing practical lessons from combat operations in Ukraine,” Rutte said.
