Lithuanian President Nausėda criticises US ‘peace plan’ for Ukraine

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda criticised the 28-point US ‘peace plan’ aimed at ending the Russian-Ukrainian war, saying Ukraine’s future cannot be decided without its participation.

This was reported by LRT.

Nausėda stressed that Ukraine's future cannot be decided without its participation and that any proposals putting Ukraine in a weak position are unacceptable.

“We are talking about a possible reduction of Ukraine's armed forces, territorial concessions, and some other decisions that would, of course, effectively mean capitulation,” he said.

According to him, the European Union should seize the moment and demonstrate the “very strong will of the European community,” which defends Ukraine's territorial integrity and is ready to provide the necessary security guarantees. Nausėda added that proposals to reduce the Ukrainian army by 50% cannot be considered a security guarantee: “It is very difficult to understand such an idea.”

The Lithuanian president also emphasised the critical role of the US in shaping the future security architecture. He noted that he is awaiting the final document and Ukraine's response, as well as an active position from European partners:

“We cannot sit on the sidelines and simply comment on peace plans. We must actively participate in this, and this is our historic opportunity.”

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said that the US-proposed ‘peace plan’ for Ukraine is not final.

Ukraine and Europe cannot ignore the Donald Trump administration's 28-point ‘peace plan.’ According to experts, the plan effectively reflects Russian demands and requires significant concessions from Kyiv. At this stage, cooperation between Ukraine and the US is crucial to concluding a peace and security agreement.

After meeting with the US delegation, Zelensky will discuss the draft peace plan, which could significantly affect Kyiv's future actions and international relations.

According to the new US peace plan, Ukraine must abandon the idea of joining NATO for several years and will not be able to host foreign peacekeeping forces on its territory, The Wall Street Journal reports. In exchange, Moscow is expected to promise not to attack Ukraine or other European countries.

Earlier, Axios reported that Zelensky agreed to negotiate Trump’s peace plan for Ukraine, despite its “shocking details.” At the same time, the US assured that the plan could still be amended and would be coordinated with the EU.

US President Donald Trump has been informed of the detailed plan to end the war in Ukraine, which is being worked on by his special envoy Steve Witkoff, and fully supports it, said Trump administration spokeswoman Caroline Levitt.

The security guarantees the US is prepared to provide to Ukraine as part of its ‘peace plan’ are designed to last for 10 years, with the possibility of extension.
