Germany plans to open a new naval port

The German Navy is exploring the possibility of establishing another military port on the North Sea coast amid growing military needs.

This was reported by the German broadcaster Spiegel.

As noted, the German Navy, together with the Federal Ministry of Defense, has confirmed discussions regarding this initiative, though details are not being disclosed at this time. Currently, the country’s only naval port on the North Sea is located in Wilhelmshaven.

The need for a new base is explained by “new requirements for location and facilities” related to the future expansion of the armed forces. The ministry notes that an analysis of potential locations and an assessment of their ability to promptly fulfill the necessary functions are currently underway.

“In this context, the Navy is examining potential new maritime locations and various ports to determine their ability to meet its needs in a timely manner,” the spokesperson stated.

He added that the evaluation process is still ongoing and no final decision has been made yet.

The ports of Emden and Bremerhaven are among the main options under consideration. Both are already used for handling military cargo, particularly during troop movements and training exercises.

Bremen authorities noted that the port in Bremerhaven can be quickly adapted for military needs. According to a government representative, construction could take place in the fishing port area, where all necessary planning documents have already been prepared and development plans approved.

Initially, this area was planned to be used for the “Energy Port”—an industrial project within the framework of the energy transition. However, its implementation has been delayed, and these plans may be postponed if the naval project is launched.

At the same time, Lower Saxony supports the option of locating the base in Emden, emphasizing the region’s interest in strengthening its military presence.

“Lower Saxony is the number one state for the German armed forces, and, accordingly, the Lower Saxony government is very interested in a powerful base in Emden,” the spokesperson stated.

As a reminder, the average price of diesel fuel in Germany has set a new record, rising to 2.32 euros per liter.
