Norway has called on China to urge Russia to begin negotiations regarding Ukraine
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gar Støre called on China to use its influence with Russia to help bring about the start of negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.
According to Støre, a significant portion of his talks with the Chinese diplomat focused on the situation in Ukraine.
“China is likely the country with the best and most direct access to the Russian leadership. We expect, hope, and strongly urge China to use this channel,” the Norwegian prime minister said.
The Norwegian prime minister emphasized that peace talks must begin without any preconditions, and that a ceasefire should be the first step.
According to him, the current front line could serve as the basis for this.
“This in itself is a major concession on Ukraine’s part. It is within their territory,” Støre noted.
The Norwegian prime minister also stated that Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine limits opportunities for cooperation between Europe and China.
“There is potential for deeper cooperation between Europe and China, but as long as this war continues and China remains a close partner of Russia, this limits that possibility,” he said.
As a reminder, Kirill Budanov, head of the Main Intelligence Directorate, previously stated that China has the ability to influence Russian President Vladimir Putin and force him to end the war against Ukraine.
At the same time, according to Budanov, Beijing also derives certain benefits from the continuation of the war, which influences its current position.
He made this statement after a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Oslo, Reuters reports.
As a reminder, the Chinese and Russian navies will conduct large-scale joint exercises in the Yellow Sea in July 2026.
