US operations against Iran cost $43.6 billion — Anadolu Agency

The US Department of Defense told congressional defense committees that military operations against Iran had cost approximately $43.6 billion as of September 3. This was reported by Anadolu Agency, citing media reports and a new assessment by US Central Command.

Updated cost estimate

The new figure substantially exceeds the Pentagon’s previous public estimate of $37.5 billion. According to US Central Command, the total includes $11.2 billion in additional operating costs for which the Pentagon has already made financial commitments.

Another $28.1 billion is estimated as the cost of replacing munitions used during the conflict. The cost of replacing military equipment lost during the operations is estimated at $4.3 billion.

Data on military casualties

The Pentagon also said that since the start of US and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, 19 US service members had been killed and more than 750 had been wounded. At the same time, The Washington Post, citing six officials familiar with the figures, reported that the death toll could be higher.

Five of these officials told the outlet that at least 22 US military personnel had been killed. The sixth source, who, like the newspaper’s other sources, spoke on condition of anonymity, estimated the number of deaths at 23 people since February 28.
