Pope Leo XIV called for compromise in the interest of peace in Ukraine — Reuters
Pope Leo XIV stated that the parties to the negotiations aimed at ending the war must be prepared to compromise on certain positions in order to achieve peace. He made these remarks on September 28 during a speech to European leaders in Metz, France.
The pontiff did not explicitly mention Ukraine, but he spoke about the war in Europe and civilian casualties. He called for courage during the negotiations and a willingness to compromise for the sake of peace.
Leo XIV also cautioned Europe against viewing rearmament as the primary means of resolving the problem. In his words, it is worth considering whether states are making sufficient efforts to achieve peace, rather than merely preparing for possible future wars.
Separately, the Pope called on European countries to uphold the rule of law, maintain dialogue, and ensure the integration of migrants into society.
