The Lithuanian Parliament has approved a military training ground in the Suwalki Corridor

The Lithuanian Parliament has approved the establishment of the "Kapčiamiestis" military training ground in the Lazdijai District.

This was reported by LRT

The Lithuanian Ministry of Defense announced that property owners in the area will be sent notifications.

Compensation offers are expected early next year, and payments are to be completed by mid-2027.

Military exercises are scheduled to begin in 2028, and the firing ranges are to be completed by 2030. The training ground will host brigade-level exercises involving 3,500–4,000 military personnel, primarily from the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas noted that the training ground is of crucial importance for national defense and is essential for the national division and the German brigade stationed in Lithuania.

According to the ministry, the site was chosen due to its strategic location near the Suwalki Corridor—a narrow strip of land between Belarus and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.

The training ground will cover approximately 14,600 hectares, on which nearly 2,000 private plots, mostly forested, are currently located. State-owned land will be transferred to the ministry, lease agreements will be terminated, and the land’s designated use will be changed to serve national defense purposes.
