The Latvian prime minister's partners have expressed doubts about her ability to lead the government — Delfi
Andris Šuvaevs, leader of the Latvian party "Progressives," has publicly questioned Prime Minister Evika Silina's ability to lead the government responsibly.
This was reported by the publication Delfi.
The conflict surrounding the dismissal of Defense Minister Andris Spruds following an incident involving Russian drones sparked a severe political crisis.
Tensions within the coalition reached a peak on the evening of May 10, when the prime minister preempted Spruds’ official resignation statement with her own post on social media.
Silina stated that the minister had lost her trust and announced her intention to appoint a professional military officer—Colonel Raivis Melnis—to the position.
The “Progressives” viewed this move as a direct violation of coalition agreements, since the position of defense minister belonged to them under the party quota.
Andris Šuvajevs emphasized that the party learned of the prime minister’s decision just minutes before the public announcement.
“At this point, the ‘Progressives’ do not believe that Silina is capable, given the events of recent days, of responsibly leading the government,” the faction leader stated.
He added that the actions of the head of the Cabinet of Ministers have significantly undermined communication within the ruling team.
To clarify the circumstances, the “Progressives” faction has invited Evika Silina to a meeting scheduled for Wednesday, May 13.
Party members are demanding detailed explanations regarding the reasons for the sudden change in personnel policy and the disregard for the position of coalition partners.
