Negotiations between the US and Russia on a peace plan: no compromise reached
At a meeting in the Kremlin between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, details of a peace plan for Ukraine were discussed.
According to Kremlin spokesman Vladimir Ushakov, no compromise was reached between the parties, and the focus was on general issues rather than specific wording. At the same time, several options for Putin's plan were considered, and the Russian side received new documents with proposals from the US.
According to Ushakov, the prospect of a peaceful settlement remains uncertain, as some of the American proposals do not correspond to Russia's interests. At the same time, Putin noted Moscow's readiness to consider some of these proposals, which have been criticised by the Russian side.
According to Ushakov, several options for a ‘settlement in Ukraine’ were discussed at the meeting, and during the five hours that the meeting lasted, this issue ‘was discussed in detail.’
He said that Moscow had received four more documents in addition to Trump's initial 28-point plan for a settlement in Ukraine.
When asked how the prospects for peace had changed after the talks, Ushakov shrugged and said, ‘They certainly haven't moved further away.’
He added that there is no ‘compromise version’ of the plan for Ukraine yet, and that ‘some American proposals are not acceptable to Russia.’ The ‘territorial issue’ was also discussed at the meeting.
According to Ushakov, Putin said that Moscow could agree to some aspects of the US plan for Ukraine, but that some aspects were criticised by the Russian side.
Overall, the Russian dictator's aide concluded, Putin's conversation with Witkoff and Kushner was useful and constructive.
Putin's special envoy Kirill Dmitriev, commenting on the results of the negotiations, limited himself to one word on social media: productive.
On the eve of the meeting in Paris, consultations were held with Ukrainian representatives, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, who assessed the new version of the plan as ‘better.’
Further steps in the negotiations remain uncertain, as both sides have yet to reach an agreement. This may indicate a lengthy process of peaceful settlement in Ukraine.
