Popular Resort Imposes Strict Fine on Tourists — People
In Italy's Cinque Terre National Park, the administration has imposed strict financial penalties on travelers who choose to wear open-toed summer shoes while hiking.
Violators who appear on hiking trails in flip-flops, sandals, or flip-flops face an immediate fine.
Regional authorities have been forced to take such strict measures due to safety risks.
The picturesque nature reserve, whose name translates as “Five Lands,” encompasses five famous villages along the Italian Riviera. This location attracts millions of foreign visitors with its clear blue waters and sandy beaches.
However, since 2019, the rules for hiking trails between the villages have been significantly tightened, requiring only closed-toe and sturdy footwear.
The reason for this rule is entirely pragmatic and stems from concern for visitors’ safety.
The park’s mountain trails are often too steep and slippery, which regularly led to injuries among unprepared hikers.
Local rescue services spent enormous resources evacuating victims who had ventured into the mountains in unsuitable clothing.
“These are challenging trails, in some cases similar to mountain trails. It’s extremely important to wear the right footwear!” said the park director.
