The population of wild Asian elephants in China has grown to nearly 400, according to ECNS. The report states that the country is using a system of nature reserves, special feeding sites, and early warning systems to protect the animals, while also strengthening the legal framework.
In 2021, a herd of wild Asian elephants in Yunnan Province traveled more than 1,400 kilometers over 124 days. This journey attracted international attention.
ECNS also notes that Reuters previously reported on the recovery of China’s wild elephant population, while highlighting the growing pressure on their available habitats. According to Reuters’ assessment, this could increase the risk of human-elephant conflicts.
