Ambassadors visit Latvia’s eastern border — LSM English
Heads of diplomatic missions accredited to Latvia visited the country’s eastern border region, Latgale, on September 16. The annual regional trip for ambassadors was organized by Latvia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
As LSM English reports, the purpose of the visit was to present diplomats with Latgale’s cultural and historical heritage, as well as opportunities for investment and economic cooperation in the region. The program also emphasized strengthening Europe’s eastern flank and Latvia’s measures to reinforce the border.
Visits to an enterprise and cultural sites
On the way to Latgale, the participants visited the Koknese Manor complex, where Latvian writer Rūdolfs Blaumanis once lived. In Rēzekne, the ambassadors visited the VEREMS wood-processing enterprise, managed by Latvijas Finieris, and met with the chairman of the company’s supervisory board, Jānis Stāris.

At the GORS arts center, the diplomats were received by representatives of all nine municipalities of the Latgale region.
Learning about border protection
The head of Latvia’s State Border Guard, General Guntis Pujāts, received the delegation at the State Border Guard College and the canine center. The ambassadors then traveled to the Grebņeva border crossing point in Ludza Municipality, where they learned about measures to strengthen the eastern border and the work of the border service on the external border of the European Union and NATO.
The trip concluded with a visit to Preiļi Castle. Latvia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been organizing regional visits for heads of diplomatic missions for more than ten years. Last year, ambassadors visited Zemgale, and the year before that, Kurzeme.
