UAE ambassador to Germany highlights importance of neutrality for diplomacy
Ahmed Al-Attar, the United Arab Emirates ambassador to Germany, said in Berlin that the UAE’s neutral position helps the country play an increasingly prominent role in international diplomacy. Ahead of the state visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohammed to Germany, the diplomat also mentioned the Emirates’ mediation in prisoner exchanges between Ukraine and Russia, the aggressor state.
Mediation in prisoner exchanges
According to The National, since the beginning of Russia’s war against Ukraine in 2022, the UAE has conducted 26 mediations between the sides. As a result of these efforts, Ukraine and Russia exchanged nearly 8,000 prisoners.
Al-Attar called the UAE-organized exchanges of Russian and Ukrainian prisoners of war important, as well as humanitarian support for Ukraine in several areas. According to him, the Emirates’ relations with both countries make it possible to maintain communication despite the breakdown in relations between Russia, Ukraine and NATO.

In February, talks involving Russia, Ukraine and the United States were held in Abu Dhabi, aimed at ending the war that has lasted for more than four years.
UAE president’s visit to Germany
UAE President Sheikh Mohammed is set to begin a state visit to Germany on Wednesday. He plans to meet with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The sides are expected to discuss deepening cooperation, including in the economic and development spheres.
The ambassador said that the UAE seeks not to be a party to international conflicts and acts in accordance with its own interests. He also described the Emirates as a supplier of energy resources, a source of investment capital, and a logistics and aviation hub that can be a strategic partner for Germany.
