Businessmen linked to Orbán are suspected of moving capital abroad, according to The Guardian

Businesspeople and officials close to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and his Fidesz party may be moving assets out of the country en masse following their election defeat.

The Guardian reports this.

Péter Magyar, leader of the opposition Tisza Party, stated that Orbán’s inner circle is attempting to safeguard their wealth in advance against potential investigations following a change in government.

“Oligarchs linked to Orbán are transferring tens of billions of forints to the UAE, the US, Uruguay, and other distant countries,” Magyar wrote on social media. He also called on law enforcement agencies to prevent individuals implicated in potential cases from leaving the country.

According to him, the family of Lőrinc Mészáros—one of Orbán’s closest allies—may leave the country. During the prime minister’s tenure, the businessman became Hungary’s richest person, largely thanks to government contracts.

Mátyás also claims that some families connected to big business have already left the country: they took their children out of school and arranged additional security measures for the move.

So far, there has been no official confirmation of this information from the Hungarian authorities.

Recently, Hungary’s nearly former Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced his resignation from his parliamentary seat. However, he expressed his willingness to continue leading the Fidesz party if the party congress supports his candidacy.

Meanwhile, Hungarian investigative journalist Szabolcs Páni claims that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán may be preparing to leave for the United States in the event of a political crisis.
