On August 14, Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs commented on the incident involving a drone that violated the country’s airspace. According to him, the incident confirmed the effectiveness of Latvia’s airspace defense system.

“This is proof that Latvia’s airspace is protected,” Prime Minister Kulbergs said, commenting on the downing of a foreign drone on Friday in the Balvi district.

He thanked the National Armed Forces (NAF) and NATO allies for their professional and prompt actions, which made it possible to successfully destroy the drone that entered Latvian airspace in the middle of the night.

Units are currently conducting a search in the area.

“The leadership is in contact with the Balvi municipality,” the prime minister wrote, promising to provide an update “as soon as additional information becomes available.”

“At the same time, such incidents remind us that we must continue to strengthen our capabilities for monitoring and countering drones along Latvia’s eastern border so that we can detect, identify, and neutralize anypotential threat as quickly as possible,” the prime minister emphasized.

As a reminder, NATO fighter jets shot down a drone in Latvian airspace.

As a reminder, the Russians used a Shahed drone to deliberately strike a passenger train in the Odesa region, resulting in fatalities.
