Nepal’s Prime Minister Shah discusses Bhotekoshi disaster aftermath with Guterres — Kathmandu Post
In New York, United States, Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres ahead of his address at the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. The sides discussed climate risks for Nepal, the consequences of the Bhotekoshi disaster and possible support from the UN.
Condolences over the disaster
As Kathmandu Post reports, Guterres expressed deep condolences over the loss of life and property caused by the disaster in Bhotekoshi. He stated the UN’s solidarity with Nepal on issues related to climate change and also noted the country’s young delegation.
The UN secretary-general recalled that he visited Nepal as a tourist in 1978 and said he would continue supporting the country even after leaving office.

Relocation and green reconstruction
Shah thanked Guterres for his favorable attitude toward Nepal and congratulated him on his work as UN secretary-general. According to the prime minister’s secretariat, he said Nepal had suffered significant losses due to the Bhotekoshi disaster and warned of a high risk of glacial lake outburst floods.
The meeting also addressed the relocation of people living along riverbanks and plans for green reconstruction. Support for extending Nepal’s transition period from the UN category of least developed countries was a separate topic.
