South Korean President Lee visits soldiers injured in DMZ — Korea Herald

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung visited three service members who were injured in mine explosions in the Demilitarized Zone. They are receiving treatment at the Armed Forces Capital Hospital in Seongnam, Korea Herald reports.

According to the presidential office, Lee spoke with the injured soldiers in their hospital rooms and urged them to focus on recovery. The service members thanked their comrades and said they would like to remain in the army and continue serving the country after recovering.

Support for treatment and service

The president also met with the families of those injured and promised support for treatment, rehabilitation and the wounded soldiers’ continued military service. He instructed officials to check whether service members injured during operations receive proper compensation, as well as to prepare specific assistance measures and inform the families about them.

According to presidential spokesperson Kim Sung-wan, the soldiers’ relatives complained that the injured personnel were being used to fuel disputes and spread conspiracy theories. Lee’s visit took place without photographs because the families feared that published images could cause emotional distress to the injured soldiers’ young children.

Explosions near the demarcation line

Three South Korean army service members were injured on September 21 during a route-clearing operation south of the Military Demarcation Line in Paju, Gyeonggi Province. The South Korean military preliminarily concluded that the explosions were caused by mines laid by North Korea as part of border fortification work, including the installation of minefields in the DMZ.

Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, dismissed this assessment as groundless and warned of consequences if Seoul takes retaliatory measures based on Pyongyang’s responsibility. Afterwards, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff condemned North Korea’s border fortifications as a violation of the armistice agreement and demanded an apology and appropriate measures in connection with the incident.
