The UN Security Council will convene on May 19 in response to Russia's massive attacks against Ukraine

The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday, May 19, to discuss the unprecedented escalation of Russian attacks against Ukraine’s civilian population and critical infrastructure. The request to convene the meeting was initiated by the Ukrainian side in response to the mass killings of civilians.

This was reported by Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Andriy Melnyk.

Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga noted that over the past 24 hours, Russia launched 675 drones and 56 missiles, damaging more than 50 buildings across the country. In Kyiv, the death toll has risen to 10, including children, and dozens of injured remain in hospitals. Due to the scale of the terror, May 15 has been declared a Day of Mourning in the capital, and Ukrainian embassies are flying their flags at half-mast.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs plans to invite the foreign diplomatic corps to inspect the destroyed high-rise buildings in Kyiv on Friday morning. Andriy Sybiga called on the international community to respond strongly to Russia’s actions, emphasizing the need to use all available platforms to hold the aggressor accountable. The UN Security Council must provide a legal and political assessment of the barbaric strikes on residential neighborhoods.

Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga initiated an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council following a massive Russian attack that resulted in the deaths of Ukrainian civilians.
