Romania Will Keep the Second Reactor at Its Nuclear Power Plant Operating for Another 9 Days — Bloomberg
Romania will continue to operate the second power unit at the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant for at least another nine days. The decision was made after the water level in the Danube near the plant rose by 4 cm.
This was announced by Radu Miruce, Romania’s acting Minister of Defense and Transportation. According to him, following blasting operations on the Danube and the removal of underwater obstacles, the water level in the Cernavoda area has risen by 4 cm over the past 24 hours. The day before, it had dropped by 3 cm.
Last week, Romania took extraordinary measures to increase the water supply to the nuclear power plant. Specifically, a rock formation on the Danube was blown up and barges were sunk to alter the river’s current and ensure the plant had sufficient water to cool the reactors.
“Based on the current forecast, this will allow us to keep the second unit in operation for at least another nine days,” Miruce said.
Earlier, Romania declared a state of emergency in the energy sector for August due to a significant reduction in electricity production. This was caused by drought and record-low water levels in the Danube, which also affected nuclear power operations in neighboring Hungary.

As a reminder, on August 6, Romania continued the operation to flood loaded barges in the Danube riverbed. This is an effort to raise the water level near the Cernavodă nuclear power plant and ensure its stable operation.
Five power units at nuclear power plants in Ukraine have already been prepared for the heating season.
