Sandu Responded to the Taliban Delegation's Visit to Moldova
On August 7, Moldovan President Maia Sandu commented on the controversial visit to Chisinau by a delegation from the Afghan Ministry of Agriculture, which represents the Taliban government. The head of state stated that the situation should be assessed by the relevant authorities and that the country’s foreign relations must comply with its international obligations.
Commenting on the scandal, the Moldovan president placed the blame for what happened on officials from the Moldovan Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“It is shameful when people who hold fairly high government positions are unfamiliar with the country’s policy toward a particular state,” she noted.
According to Sandu, the Taliban delegation’s visit to Moldova was made possible because the State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture had not familiarized himself with Moldova’s position regarding the current regime in Afghanistan.
At the same time, Foreign Ministry officials, having received an official request from another agency, did not conduct additional consultations, relying instead on the signature of a high-ranking official.
“Although the procedure did not require additional consultations, it is surprising that the Foreign Ministry confirmed the request. It seems that not everyone reads foreign policy documents,” Sandu said, according to NewsMaker.
Earlier, Sandu addressed the question of whether Moldova could forcibly reclaim Transnistria.
As a reminder, the Moldovan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has warned its citizens about heightened checks, interrogations lasting several hours, and instances of coercion to sign contracts with the Russian Ministry of Defense when attempting to enter Russian territory.
