Sheinbaum: Mexico will not sign an agreement affecting its sovereignty
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said that her government will not sign any agreement with the United States that affects the country’s sovereignty. She stated this position on September 9 amid negotiations on the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, known as the USMCA.
Separate negotiations
As Anadolu Agency reports, Sheinbaum said that the United States had decided to conduct separate negotiations with Mexico and Canada rather than bring the three partners to one table. According to her, the Mexican side is holding its own consultations with Washington and is not involved in matters between the United States and Canada.
The president stressed that Mexico is ready to discuss trade and economic cooperation if this does not limit its ability to make decisions independently.
Tariffs and trade
Topics of the negotiations include US tariffs on Mexican steel, aluminum and automobiles. Mexico seeks to secure better conditions for its exports and opposes additional tariffs on key sectors of the economy.

Sheinbaum named intellectual property and recognition by Mexico’s health regulator of certain US pharmaceutical patents among the issues that may be discussed. At the same time, she rejected conditions that could undermine Mexico’s ability to make decisions independently.
Preserving the USMCA
At the same time, the president said Mexico is interested in preserving the trade agreement involving all three North American countries, as it is beneficial to each of them, she said.
The USMCA, called T-MEC in Mexico, entered into force in 2020, replacing the North American Free Trade Agreement. It sets out trade rules between Mexico, the United States and Canada.
