Sweden will purchase ten U.S.-made HIMARS systems
The Swedish government has approved the purchase of about ten HIMARS rocket artillery systems from the American company Lockheed Martin.
This was reported by the Sweden Herald, citing a statement by Swedish Defense Minister Paul Jonsson.
On Monday, the government authorized the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV) to purchase the HIMARS for the army’s needs. The deal is valued at $732 million.
Sweden will receive ten launchers manufactured by Lockheed Martin, as well as a significant amount of ammunition. According to the defense minister, the first deliveries could begin as early as next year.
“This strengthens our defense capabilities and makes it more difficult to attack Sweden,” Jonsson stated.
Currently, the Swedish Army does not have any rocket artillery systems. The acquisition of HIMARS will increase the range of target engagement—from 80 to 300 km, depending on the type of ammunition.
“This gives us the ability to strike targets at significantly greater distances than with our old artillery,” the minister explained.
