Swedish parliament speaker asks Andersson to form government — Cyprus Mail
In Sweden, parliament speaker Andreas Norlén has asked Social Democratic Party leader and former prime minister Magdalena Andersson to form a new government. This came after the centre-left's victory in the election held on Sunday.
Kristersson's resignation
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson of the right-wing Moderate Party announced his resignation on Thursday. His four-party bloc suffered a narrow defeat in the election, Cyprus Mail reports.
At a press conference, Norlén said that Andersson was ready to take on the task. After meeting with the speaker, she said that Swedes had voted for a new direction for the country. According to her, the government should not divide society but unite Sweden and move the country forward.
Forming a coalition
Andersson will have to seek support from four opposition parties. Some of them have said that they do not want either to join a joint government or to support a cabinet of which they would not be part.

The Social Democratic leader said she intends to create a broad coalition but did not specify which parties could join the government. She has also already ruled out any cooperation with the far-right Sweden Democrats.
Andersson became Sweden's first female prime minister in 2021 and led the government for ten months. After the 2018 election, Social Democratic leader Stefan Löfven secured parliamentary support only after a record 134 days.
The parliament speaker can ask four candidates to form a government. If parliament rejects all candidates, the incumbent government will serve in a caretaker capacity until new elections, which must be held within three months.
