The U.S. May Rename an Aircraft Carrier After Trump — CNN

The U.S. Navy is considering renaming the aircraft carrier CVN-81, which was previously slated to be named after Pearl Harbor hero Doris Miller. According to CNN, one of the options under discussion is naming the ship after Donald Trump, though no final decision has been made yet.

The U.S. Navy is reportedly reconsidering its initial decision that the new Ford-class aircraft carrier, which is still under construction, be named after Doris Miller, a Black sailor who distinguished himself through heroism during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and became the first African American to be awarded the Navy Cross.

The decision to name the aircraft carrier after him was announced in January 2020 on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

According to two sources, discussions began this year about naming the ship after President Donald Trump instead—which would be an unprecedented move in U.S. history.

There are plans to name another Navy ship after Miller and to nominate him for the Medal of Honor, the highest military award in the United States.

Miller’s descendants say they have heard nothing about the renaming plans.

The Navy declined to comment and referred reporters to the Pentagon press office, which in turn said it had no announcements to make on the matter at this time.

There is little time left for a potential renaming—the ship’s name must be determined before the keel-laying ceremony, which will take place in late 2026 and is a solemn public event. Construction could last until 2034.

CNN reported this, citing its sources.

As a reminder, Iranian officials have begun publicly discussing prioritizing offensive operations amid a stalemate in diplomatic relations with the United States. According to Channel NewsAsia, citing AFP, Tehran also views control of the Strait of Hormuz as a lever of influence in its standoff with Washington.

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that any country that helps Iran or does business with it will face enormous economic consequences. He wrote this on the social media platform Truth Social, according to BBC News.

Iraq has asked Iran to grant its oil shipments “special status” when passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Shipping in the area has declined significantly since the war began in February.
