The U.S. Did Not Support the Return of the Venezuelan Opposition Leader to the Country – NYT

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado was unable to return to Venezuela following a series of earthquakes because the U.S. administration did not approve her trip.

According to the NYT, Machado had planned to return to her homeland to help those affected by the natural disaster. However, the White House did not approve her trip.

Subsequently, Dutch authorities denied the opposition leader entry to the island of Curaçao, from where she intended to travel to Venezuela.

Sources speaking to The New York Times claim that U.S. officials viewed Machado’s attempt to return as a political gesture. Furthermore, she does not have a valid Venezuelan passport, which also made her onward journey impossible.

No official comments regarding this information have yet been issued by the U.S. administration, the Dutch government, or María Corina Machado herself. The New York Times reports this, citing sources.
