The U.S. has confirmed its intention to reduce its contribution to NATO

Pentagon officials have officially informed NATO allies that the United States will significantly reduce and adjust its current military contribution to NATO’s force structure. This decision was developed in accordance with new defense burden-sharing guidelines, which are clearly defined in the 2026 U.S. National Defense Strategy, as well as the U.S. strategic vision for the “NATO 3.0” concept.

This large-scale initiative is directly led by U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby. The main goal of the reform is for European countries to finally assume primary financial and material responsibility for their own conventional defense in response to modern security threats.

Earlier, on May 22, Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor to the Deputy Secretary of Defense Alexander Velez-Green had already briefed European partners in detail on these changes during a meeting of defense policy officials at NATO headquarters in Brussels.

USEUCOM Commander, U.S. Air Force General Alexus Grinkewich, candidly stated that the former force model had long featured an absolutely “unhealthy interdependence” of the European continent on the U.S. armed forces. President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hagset had previously made it clear that this outdated system would inevitably change, as the potential reality of simultaneous armed conflicts in several different theaters of war around the world requires an immediate reallocation of resources. The new approach is intended to strengthen the Alliance’s overall defense plans, making them significantly more realistic and ensuring that NATO no longer relies exclusively on U.S. forces, which are critically needed by Washington to deter threats in other strategic regions of the world.

General Grinkevich, who also serves as Supreme Allied Commander Europe, noted that this process has been systematically coordinated between USEUCOM and the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) over many months. He outlined two key areas in which Canada and European Alliance members must significantly step up their efforts in the near future: providing additional manned and unmanned aircraft, as well as increasing the number of warships. Allies discussed current practical steps to offset the reduction in U.S. military capabilities in detail this week during a special conference on force generation, held on June 2–3 in the Belgian city of Mons under the leadership of British Air Marshal Sir Johnny Stringer.

This is stated in a June 3 release from U.S. European Command.

Former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated that relations between the U.S. and its European allies have become more strained and less predictable than they were even two years ago. According to him, the situation within the Alliance is no longer just complicated, but one that requires constant monitoring.

The U.S. is negotiating the possible deployment of its nuclear weapons in several more European countries. According to sources familiar with the discussions, this involves American bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons.
