The U.S. plans to reduce the number of troops assigned to NATO — Welt

The United States intends to significantly reduce the number of military assets and units previously assigned to NATO’s rapid response forces under the NATO Force Model.

Washington has already provided its allies with a list of forces and assets that it no longer plans to allocate for the Alliance’s needs. This refers to the NATO Force Model, which defines the military resources that member countries can rapidly deploy to a potential conflict zone within a timeframe of 10 days to six months.

The largest cuts may affect the air force and navy.

Specifically, the U.S. proposes reducing the number of F-16 multi-role fighters available to NATO from 99 to 63. The number of F-15E fighter-bombers could be reduced from 54 to 36 aircraft.

Refueling aircraft are also under review. The number of KC-135s is planned to be reduced from 71 to 63, and all eight of the newest KC-46s may be completely removed from the list of assets allocated to the Alliance.

According to Welt, the changes may also affect parts of the reconnaissance aviation, unmanned systems, and certain naval platforms.

No official comments have yet been received from NATO or the U.S. Department of Defense regarding this information.
