The U.S. plans to invite Putin to the G20 summit in Miami, according to the Washington Post

The United States intends to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin to the G20 summit, scheduled for December in Miami. However, an official invitation has not yet been sent.

This is reported in The Washington Post.

The State Department stated that President Donald Trump supports Russia’s participation in the G20.

“President Donald Trump has made it clear that Russia can participate in all G20 meetings, as the U.S. is focused on hosting a successful and productive summit,” the department noted.

According to an administration official, Russia, as a G20 member, is expected to be invited to both ministerial meetings and the leaders’ summit.

“No official invitations have been sent yet, but Russia is a member of the G20 and will be invited,” the official said on condition of anonymity.

Donald Trump himself stated that he does not have detailed information regarding the invitation, but does not object to Putin’s participation.

“If he comes, it will likely be very helpful,” he said, adding that “we need to talk to everyone.”

At the same time, Trump expressed doubt that the Russian leader would agree to the trip.

The Kremlin stated that a decision regarding Putin’s participation has not yet been made.

“A decision on the format of our participation will be made closer to the summit,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Pankin also noted that an invitation had allegedly already been received “at the highest level,” but a final decision has not yet been made.

Russia has not participated in in-person G20 summits since 2019. Initially, this was due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and later—to the full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for Putin.

The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Russia had allegedly received an invitation to participate in the G20 summit in the United States at the highest level. The event is scheduled to take place in Miami in December 2026.
