It has been revealed why Ilya Traber, a crime boss close to Putin, was arrested
The Basmanny District Court of Moscow has ordered the two-month detention of 75-year-old businessman Ilya Traber, who is considered one of the leaders of the Tambov organized crime group and a longtime associate of Putin.
The influential businessman was detained by officers from the FSB’s central headquarters following extensive searches of his private residence and office premises.
Immediately after the investigative procedures in St. Petersburg, the suspect was transported under guard to the Russian capital to have a preventive measure imposed.
Russian law enforcement officials suspect the detainee of organizing the high-profile contract killing of businessman and municipal deputy Alexander Petrov, who was considered in criminal circles to be a close associate and “right-hand man” of Traber himself.
As a reminder, Petrov was shot by a professional sniper near his own cottage in the Leningrad Region in October 2020.
The official investigation is convinced that the motive for the killing of his business partner was a long-standing conflict over the division of spheres of influence in their joint business.
Ilya Traber has been officially recognized by the media as one of St. Petersburg’s most influential and dangerous underworld figures since the 1990s.
Previously, the Spanish prosecutor’s office officially designated him as one of the key leaders of the Tambov mafia, and international investigations have confirmed his ties to the Russian dictator.
According to independent journalists, the billionaire was among a select circle of honored guests at the Russian president’s private birthday celebrations in 2004 and 2016.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was at the time forced to publicly confirm that the head of the aggressor state was personally acquainted with the notorious criminal figure.
The official representative of the Russian government diplomatically described their long-standing relationship at the time, calling it “professional.”
Putin and Traber’s collaboration began while the future Kremlin leader was serving as chairman of the Committee on External Relations of the St. Petersburg City Administration.
