Pakistan court sentences five in terrorism case to five years — Dawn

An anti-terrorism court in Peshawar, Pakistan, found five people, including a juvenile, guilty under several provisions of anti-terrorism legislation and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial arms law. Each was sentenced to up to five years of rigorous imprisonment and fined 11 million Pakistani rupees, Dawn reports.

Court verdict

Anti-terrorism court judge Wali Mohammad Khan ruled that the prosecution had proven its case against Rifakullah, Kamran Faraz, Usman Ali, Mubashir Ghani and the juvenile. During proceedings involving the juvenile, the anti-terrorism court acted as a juvenile court.

The convicts were handed different prison terms, with the maximum being five years for each. The court ruled that these terms would be served concurrently.

The court declared five other people — Mehmood Shah, Qari Ehtesham, Bilal, Abdul Kabir Khan and Murad — to be absconders and issued indefinite warrants for their arrest.

Case circumstances

The case was registered on November 11, 2024, at the counter-terrorism police unit in Mohmand district. The charges included membership in a banned organization, financing and raising funds for terrorism, undergoing or providing terrorist training, and facilitating terrorist crimes.

Senior public prosecutor Manzoor Alam Khan said the suspects were detained during an intelligence-based operation and weapons were also seized from them. According to the prosecution, a police team raided an abandoned house in a refugee camp in the Yakka-Ghund area, where five armed men were present. They surrendered after being ordered to do so by security forces. The prosecution also claimed that small arms, ammunition, five anti-personnel mines and three hand grenades were seized during the operation.
