Typhoon "Dolphin" hit China: More than a million people were evacuated
Typhoon "Dolphin" made landfall on Sunday along the coast of densely populated eastern China. Due to the severe weather, more than one million people were evacuated, over a thousand flights were canceled, and the highest alert level was declared, according to Euronews.
According to China’s National Meteorological Center, the typhoon’s center made landfall near the city of Yuhuan in Zhejiang Province at around 5:30 p.m. local time. At the time of landfall, maximum wind speeds near its center exceeded 150 km/h. Central and eastern parts of Zhejiang were expected to receive between 250 and 500 mm of rainfall.
In Wenzhou alone, more than 900,000 residents were moved to safe locations, and over 1,000 temporary shelters were opened for them. In Fujian Province, nearly 99,000 people were evacuated from high-risk areas the day before.

On Sunday, nearly 1,400 flights were canceled at Shanghai’s two main passenger airports. At Hangzhou Airport in the neighboring province of Zhejiang, 270 departing and arriving flights were canceled. In Zhejiang and Fujian, service was suspended on more than 200 ferry routes, and work on maritime projects was halted. A total of 474 construction vessels were recalled to port.
The severe weather also affected other areas of the region. In Okinawa, Japan, the typhoon caused heavy rainfall and strong winds: seven people sustained minor injuries, and 5,290 households were left without power. In Taiwan, more than 180 flights were canceled and dozens of ferry services were suspended.
The China Meteorological Administration issued a red alert—the highest level in the country—due to forecasts of extremely heavy rainfall in parts of central and eastern Zhejiang. Heavy rainfall was also expected in Shanghai and parts of Fujian, Anhui, and Jiangsu provinces. Forecasters predicted that after making landfall, “Dolphin” would weaken as it moved northwestward over eastern China.
