Tikhanovsky stated that there is no potential for protest in Belarus

Belarusian opposition figure and former political prisoner Sergei Tikhanovsky believes that there is currently no potential for protest in Belarus.

He stated this in an interview with Ukrinform.

According to him, the reason for this is the authorities’ harsh suppression of protests and the lack of tangible support from other countries.

“No, there is no potential for protest in Belarus right now. This is because the authorities brutally suppressed all attempts by Belarusians to protest, and there was no real support from other countries,” Tikhanovsky noted.

At the same time, he believes that the authorities have failed to restore public trust. According to him, Minsk is trying to create new narratives to “unite the people,” but Belarusians remain united in their dissatisfaction with the authorities and their desire for change.

Earlier, the U.S. and Lukashenko agreedon the release of more than 250 Belarusian political prisoners.

Belarusian dictator Lukashenko pardoned 123 prisoners, including Belarusian opposition figure Maria Kolesnikova and human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ales Bialiatski.

U.S. Special Representative in Minsk John Cole announced Washington’s decision to lift sanctions previously imposed on Belarusian potash.
