Trump commented on Hungary's new Prime Minister Péter Magyar following Orbán's defeat

U.S. President Donald Trump said he is not concerned about Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s defeat in the April 12 parliamentary elections and commented publicly for the first time on the change of government in the country.

Trump made these remarks to ABC News reporter Jonathan Karl.

The U.S. president spoke positively about the new head of the Hungarian government, Péter Magyar, whose political party won the election.

“I think the new prime minister will do a good job—he’s a good guy.”

According to Donald Trump, Péter Magyar was previously associated with Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party and shares some of its approaches, particularly regarding migration policy.

“I think he will be a good prime minister,” the U.S. president noted.

At the same time, Donald Trump emphasized that he was not deeply involved in the electoral process in Hungary and is not sure whether his personal visit would have influenced the outcome.

“He (Orbán – ed.) was significantly behind. I wasn’t that involved in this matter. Although Viktor is a good person,” he said.

It is known that on the eve of the election, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance expressed his support for Viktor Orbán, having visited Budapest a few days before the vote.

Election winner Péter Magyar announced his intention to carry out constitutional reform aimed at preventing the usurpation of power and avoiding prolonged one-man rule, similar to Viktor Orbán’s time in office.

As a reminder, U.S. President Donald Trump commented on the results of the Hungarian election and Viktor Orbán’s defeat.

In European capitals, there is a growing reluctance to discuss EU expansion, particularly Ukraine’s accession.
