Trump called off the strikes on Iran and announced a new round of talks — CNN
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he had called off a planned “large-scale attack” on Iran and announced the resumption of negotiations with Tehran. According to him, the new round of talks is set to begin on Monday, August 3.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One after spending the weekend at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, Trump said that Iran was aware of the preparations for the attack.
“They knew the scale of the attack because they saw it being prepared. Now we are negotiating with them. The talks will begin tomorrow afternoon, and we’ll see what comes of it,” the U.S. president said.
According to Trump, U.S. allies—including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar—as well as, he claims, Iran itself, urged him to call off the planned strike.
The U.S. president noted that the parties could reach agreements regarding the Strait of Hormuz and, subsequently, regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia’s state news agency reported that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman called for de-escalation of the conflict during a phone call with Trump. According to CNN, the prince also expressed concern about possible strikes against Iran.
Trump declined to specify whether potential strikes could target Iran’s energy infrastructure. At the same time, in a post on the social media platform Truth Social, he emphasized that the U.S. remains “on high alert and ready to act” regarding Iran.
Meanwhile, Iranian state media denied the U.S. president’s claim that Tehran had asked him to call off the strikes. The semi-official Fars News Agency called Trump’s remarks false.

Tehran threatened to strike the energy infrastructure of other countries if the U.S. carried out new attacks. Officials in Tehran stated that the response would be directed not only against U.S. interests but also against countries that support potential military action.
The United States and Israel are holding consultations on possibly increasing pressure on Iran, in particular by blocking its land borders. This scenario is being considered as part of broader measures to limit Tehran’s capabilities.
