Turkey has not found a buyer for the Russian S-400s and may scrap them
Turkey’s negotiations with the United Arab Emirates regarding the sale of Russian S-400 air defense systems have reached an impasse. As a result, U.S. senators, who are demanding that Ankara divest itself of Russian weapons, are withholding approval for the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Turkey.
If Turkey fails to sell the S-400s to the UAE or decommission the systems, one option could be to destroy them. A U.S. official stated that Ankara is considering several ways to resolve this issue.
News of Turkey’s negotiations with the UAE regarding the sale of the S-400s emerged over a month ago. At that time, Ankara requested permission from Russia to resell the systems. However, according to sources familiar with the situation, the negotiation process subsequently stalled.
The exact reasons for this are unknown. At the same time, one possible reason cited is the UAE’s reluctance to purchase Russian weapons, as the country is also seeking to acquire American F-35 fighter jets. U.S. Senator Chris Coons noted that any country that purchases and deploys the S-400 could face the same restrictions and problems as Turkey.
