UK releases RAF Fairford case suspect on bail — Cyprus Mail

In the United Kingdom, a 25-year-old British-Iranian citizen detained on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts in the RAF Fairford air base case has been released on bail. Cyprus Mail reports, citing British counterterrorism police.

London searches completed

The man was detained on Thursday in connection with an incident that occurred last weekend near RAF Fairford air base in western England. US bombers took part in strikes on targets in Iran from this base.

Police also reported that searches of two properties in London had been completed. Law enforcement said the investigation into the circumstances of the events in Gloucestershire is continuing.

Detentions near three vans

The incident near Fairford began early last Sunday, when five Britons in their 20s were detained near three vans. They were suspected of terrorist offences and offences involving explosives.

The men were later released without charge on bail and under strict conditions. Investigators found petrol in the vans, but said there was no improvised explosive device there.

Counterterrorism police described the investigation as complex and are examining whether a foreign state could have been involved in the incident. Prime Minister Andy Burnham said on Wednesday that the case may have had a link to Iran.

US President Donald Trump spoke of a plan to cause significant damage to the base, while US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also pointed to possible involvement by a foreign actor. Iran called allegations of its involvement unfounded and summoned the British ambassador in Tehran on Thursday over the case.
