Nearly 2,400 families displaced in Yemen in one day

On September 10, amid an escalation in hostilities in Yemen, the displacement of 2,398 families was recorded: 823 in Taiz governorate and 1,575 in Lahj governorate. The total number of registered displaced families rose to 9,746, compared with 7,348 the previous day, Anadolu Agency reports, citing the Executive Unit for Camp Management for Displaced Persons.

Accommodation and humanitarian needs

Displaced families are arriving from areas where fighting continues in Taiz, Al Hudaydah and along the country’s western coast. The named areas include Jabal Habashi, Al Ma’afer, Maqbanah, Al Waziyah, Mawza, Mocha, Hays and Al Khawkhah.

Field teams are registering families, verifying their data and places of arrival, assessing needs and coordinating the delivery of humanitarian assistance. Several schools were opened in the Al Mudharabah district of Lahj to accommodate people, while some families were taken in by local residents in their homes.

The most urgent needs were identified as shelter, food, life-saving assistance, basic-needs kits, hygiene supplies, drinking water, as well as water supply and sanitation services. The unit also held a coordination meeting with the UN Refugee Agency regarding assistance and growing humanitarian needs.

Escalation of fighting

Earlier on September 11, the International Organization for Migration reported that at least 46,000 people in Yemen had been displaced since the escalation of fighting began last week. The organization said the number was rising at an alarming rate but did not specify the areas from which people had fled.

According to Anadolu Agency, fighting between government forces and the Houthis has intensified in recent days following the resumption of clashes in early July. The Houthis claim control over all of Al Hudaydah governorate and advances in western Taiz, including the capture of the city and port of Mocha. Government forces, for their part, report gains in the northern governorate of Al Jawf near the border with Saudi Arabia; fighting is also continuing in Marib, Al Bayda and Ad Dali.
