Concerns are growing in Europe about an escalation by Russia, and the Baltic states are stepping up their defenses

Concerns are growing in Europe about an escalation by Russia, and the Baltic states are stepping up their defenses

European countries are taking the risk of the war spreading beyond Ukraine increasingly seriously, fearing that Russia might resort to escalation to justify a new wave of mobilization.

The Wall Street Journal reports this, citing European officials, military personnel, and intelligence representatives.

According to Reuters, NATO is preparing to strengthen the defense of the Baltic states and deploy additional forces to the Alliance’s eastern flank.

As the WSJ notes, in recent weeks Moscow has stepped up its threats against the Baltic states, specifically citing “decision-making centers” in Latvia and warning of “unpredictable consequences” for supporting Ukraine.

There have also been reports of air raid alerts in the region due to suspected Russian drones flying in from Belarus.

European officials believe that the protracted war is creating a difficult human resources situation for the Kremlin. According to Western intelligence estimates, Russia’s monthly losses exceed the rate of conscript recruitment by approximately 35,000 people.

Against this backdrop, as the WSJ reports, the continuation of hostilities could push Moscow toward a new forced mobilization, and a potential escalation could be used as a justification for it.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas also stated that the Kremlin may resort to escalating the situation to justify mobilization measures.

According to Reuters, NATO is working on a new command structure for the Baltic states. Currently, Alliance forces in the region are under a single command in Szczecin, Poland, but there are plans to create a separate German-Dutch corps to defend Latvia and Estonia.

This would be a unit of 40,000 to 60,000 troops designed to ensure rapid deployment in the event of a threat.

Statements about a possible reduction in the U.S. military presence have become an additional cause for concern in Europe. According to Reuters, Washington may withdraw approximately 5,000 troops from Germany.

European officials also fear that political instability and economic challenges could strengthen the position of radical parties that advocate reducing support for Ukraine and revising sanctions policy.

Despite rising tensions, intelligence officials emphasize that there are currently no direct signs that Russia is preparing to attack NATO countries. At the same time, there is growing speculation in Europe that the Kremlin may be testing the Alliance’s unity and readiness through localized provocations and pressure.

Earlier, the head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, condemned Russia’s threats against the Baltic states. She called Moscow’s accusations “complete nonsense” and stated that such actions demonstrate not strength, but weakness.

As a reminder, Russian electronic warfare systems are deliberately diverting Ukrainian drones from their targets and directing them toward NATO territory.
